3-Year Limited Warranty for remanufactured engines. Review the product page, invoice, and supplied warranty documents for exact coverage and claim requirements.
We don't sell one generic 5.3. The lineup is broken into 10 application-specific listings — LM7, L59, LMG, LY5, LH6, LC9, LMF, L83, L82, LS4 — so you order the engine that bolts in to your platform.
Before your order ships we verify year, VIN, electronics generation, AFM/DOD presence, and accessory drive against the listing. No 'engine arrived but doesn't fit' surprises.
5.3L long blocks ship crated by freight. $299 advertised rate to most eligible U.S. addresses; confirm supplier availability, dispatch timing and final freight cost when ordering.
What happens between picking your fitment and turning the key. No surprises, no 'wait what's the core process.'
Use the year/make/model finder above, the application chart, or contact us. Match by VIN and AFM hardware — not just year and displacement.
Provide your original vehicle VIN and engine RPO before shipment. GOAT can review application, AFM/VVT configuration and accessory requirements prior to fulfillment.
Engine is crated and shipped via freight. $299 flat-rate to most US addresses. Approximate ship size 36×36×36 in (38×38×38 in for LS4).
Install the engine, keep the original core complete, and follow the application-specific core-return instructions. Once the correct rebuildable core is received and accepted, the refundable core deposit shown on that product is credited back.
Application, warranty, core charge, shipping, AFM hardware, and fitment confirmation — answered up front.
“5.3L” describes displacement, not a single interchangeable engine. GOAT covers early iron-block Vortec/LS-based engines, Gen IV AFM-era applications, van-specific layouts, transverse LS4 cars and later Gen V EcoTec3 direct-injection engines. The correct replacement is the one that matches the original vehicle and engine family.
The phrase is commonly used as a catch-all for GM 5.3L small-block V8s, but the engines on this page span more than one generation. Early LM7 and L59 applications are Gen III LS-based truck engines. LMG, LY5, LH6, LC9, LMF and LS4 are Gen IV-era applications. L83 and L82 are later Gen V EcoTec3 engines with direct injection and different electronics.
That is why buying by displacement alone is risky. Two engines can both be 5.3L and still differ in block material, crank/cam trigger strategy, fuel system, AFM/DOD hardware, VVT, oil pan, accessory drive, intake, sensors and front-cover layout.
Match the replacement to the vehicle’s original year, VIN, engine code/RPO, platform and fuel-management hardware. If those details do not line up, stop before ordering and have the fitment confirmed.
Known for iron-block LM7/L59 applications and wide Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe, Yukon, Suburban, Express and Savana coverage. These are among the most common 5.3L replacement engines.
More variation in electronics, cam gear, AFM/DOD, block material and platform-specific hardware. This is the generation where VIN-level matching becomes especially important.
L83 and L82 applications add Gen V electronics, direct injection, VVT and cylinder-deactivation details. Treat these as late-model application-specific replacements, not generic “LS swap” engines.
Use your VIN to narrow the engine family, then compare the exact product application before checkout.
Cross-reference your year and VIN against the table below to confirm engine code, block material, and AFM/DOD presence before ordering.

GM uses a different engine code for nearly every 5.3L application. Match by VIN before ordering — visually identical engines can have different oil pans, harnesses, and AFM hardware.
Iron-block 5.3L Vortec for most 1999-2007 Chevy/GMC trucks, SUVs, and vans. Cathedral-port aluminum heads. The most common and affordable LS-family 5.3 fitment.
Flex-fuel iron-block 5.3, same year range as LM7. Match by VIN — the L59 has FFV-specific fueling hardware.
2007-2009 iron-block 5.3 with updated electronics over LM7. Confirm by VIN and accessory layout.
2007-2009 iron-block 5.3 in the same family as LMG. VIN code separates LMG vs LY5.
Aluminum-block 5.3 with Active Fuel Management. 2007-2014 Chevy/GMC trucks and SUVs. Match VIN 3/M and verify AFM hardware before ordering.
Van-specific 5.3 used in 2008-2014 Chevy Express and GMC Savana. Different oil pan and accessory layout vs truck applications.
EcoTec3 direct-injection 5.3 for 2014-2020 Chevy/GMC trucks and SUVs. Aluminum block, AFM/DOD. The most-shopped 5.3 truck application in the modern lineup.
Direct-injection 5.3L used in select 2019-2021 GM truck applications. Verify VIN/RPO; L82 and L84 are different engines and may have different cylinder-deactivation hardware.
Transverse front-wheel-drive 5.3 used in select Chevy Impala SS, Monte Carlo SS, Buick LaCrosse Super, and Pontiac Grand Prix GXP. Uses DOD/AFM and unique FWD packaging — not interchangeable with truck/SUV 5.3 applications.
Not every 5.3L suffers the same failures, and the problem pattern changes by generation. These are the issues buyers most often need to think through when deciding between repairing the original engine, installing a used pull-out, or moving to a reman long block.
AFM/DOD-equipped applications can develop lifter or related valvetrain issues. A lifter problem can damage the camshaft, which is why a “just replace the lifter” repair is not always the end of the story.
Some AFM-era 5.3L engines are associated with oil-consumption complaints. Ring condition, PCV behavior, cylinder-deactivation hardware and prior maintenance all matter when diagnosing the original engine.
A used engine can arrive with an unknown overheating, oil-pressure or maintenance history. That risk matters because the labor to remove a bad replacement can cost nearly as much as the first installation.
Oil pans, triggers, front covers, accessory drives, sensors, AFM hardware and platform-specific parts can make two 5.3L engines non-interchangeable even when the displacement and basic appearance match.
L83 and L82 Gen V engines use direct injection and later electronics. Correct matching matters more than on an old carbureted small-block because the engine must agree with the vehicle’s control system and original hardware.
Cooling-system problems, contaminated oiling components, reused failed external parts, poor startup procedure or unresolved root causes can damage a replacement engine. The installation is part of the repair.
A reman long block is the foundation of the repair. Application-specific external components, fluids, calibration and support systems still have to be correct for the engine to live.
Re-check VIN, engine code, AFM/DOD/DFM, VVT, truck/SUV/van/FWD layout and any product-specific notes before the crate is opened for installation.
Review which intake, oil pan, sensors, front accessories, covers, manifolds and electronics transfer from the original engine. Included components vary by application.
Do not put a fresh long block behind a clogged radiator, failed oil cooler, contaminated intake, bad injector, cooling-system fault or other unresolved failure source.
Use the required oil, filter, coolant and startup procedure from the warranty documentation. Prime and verify oil pressure where the supplied instructions call for it.
Check the crate and visible engine condition at delivery. Document freight damage immediately so the shipping claim process is not compromised.
Do not discard the original engine. The correct rebuildable core must be returned under the application’s core-return rules for the refundable deposit to be credited.
The best replacement-engine decision usually starts before checkout. Use these GOAT guides to understand common 5.3L problems, engine-family differences, buying tradeoffs and the rest of the vehicle systems that affect the install.

A 5.3 is a $2,000–$5,500 purchase. The right comparison is not just price — it's warranty length, application accuracy, support before ordering, and what happens if something goes wrong.
