Chevy 350 buyer guide

The 350 is simple to recognize — but replacement fitment is not one-size-fits-all

Chevrolet’s 350 small-block is a 350-cubic-inch / 5.7L Gen I V8. Chevrolet Performance lists the familiar 4.000-inch bore and 3.480-inch stroke, but the replacement engines in this collection differ by year, VIN code, cam family, main-cap configuration, fuel setup and external hardware.

Coverage here1986–2000

1986–1995 VIN K: one-piece-seal flat-cam 350s

The first group in this catalog covers 1986–1995 one-piece-rear-seal VIN K applications. All three are EFI-era flat-cam long blocks, but they are not identical. The source separates 2-bolt and 4-bolt main versions, and also identifies a 4-bolt Isuzu-style version with a fuel-pump hole.

That means Year/Make/Model can narrow you to the correct family, but you still need to inspect or identify the original engine configuration before choosing among the three products.

1996–2000 VIN R: Vortec / roller-cam 350s

The later group moves to VIN R Vortec applications with Gen Plus heads and roller-cam configuration. Chevrolet Performance notes that production Vortec iron cylinder heads were first used on 1996 fuel-injected L31 trucks. The GOAT catalog then separates 2-bolt, 4-bolt, propane and fuel-pump-hole configurations, plus a more complete 4-bolt assembly.

Application chart

Chevy 350 / 5.7L application and configuration chart

Year/Make/Model narrows the family, but it cannot determine 2-bolt vs 4-bolt mains, propane configuration or the fuel-pump-hole requirement. Use the original engine and VIN K/VIN R details to finish the match.

Engine family reference

VIN K vs VIN R Chevy 350 engines

The biggest split in this catalog is the move from the earlier one-piece-seal VIN K flat-cam family to the later Vortec VIN R roller-cam family.

VIN K · 1986–1995

EFI-era flat-cam 350

One-piece rear seal, center-bolt valve-cover family. The catalog offers 2-bolt and 4-bolt main versions plus a specialty fuel-pump-hole configuration.

FLAT CAM · 1-PIECE SEAL · EFI
VIN R · 1996–2000

Vortec / roller-cam 350

Later Vortec family with Gen Plus head listings. The catalog separates 2-bolt, 4-bolt, propane and specialty fuel-pump-hole configurations.

VORTEC · ROLLER CAM · EFI
Complete assembly option

More than a basic long block

The complete-engine listing notes rocker covers, front cover, oil pan, water pump and balancer in the source configuration. Use the individual product page as the final included-parts reference.

VIN R · 4-BOLT · COMPLETE ENGINE

VIN tells you the family — the original engine finishes the match.

Decode the VIN first, then verify main-cap, fuel-system and fuel-pump-hole configuration before checkout.

Common 350 replacement issues

What sends an older GM 5.7L to the engine shop

These are practical replacement-engine considerations for aging 350 applications, not a diagnosis of a specific vehicle.

01

High-mileage cylinder and bearing wear

Many surviving 350s have decades of service. Low oil pressure, blow-by, cylinder wear and bearing condition can turn a targeted repair into a full long-block decision.

02

Overheating and cracked / damaged components

Cooling-system failures can damage heads, gaskets and short-block components. Correct the cooling problem before installing the replacement.

03

Wrong main-cap configuration

The catalog intentionally separates 2-bolt and 4-bolt main versions. Do not assume every 5.7L/350 from the same year range uses the same base configuration.

04

VIN K vs VIN R mismatch

An earlier flat-cam VIN K engine and a later Vortec VIN R engine are not the same catalog family. VIN is one of the fastest ways to avoid ordering across generations.

05

Propane / specialty fuel hardware

The 1996–2000 catalog includes propane-specific assemblies and fuel-pump-hole differences. These details are easy to miss when shopping only by displacement.

06

Reusing the original failure source

Contaminated oiling parts, bad cooling components, injector problems or installation errors can damage the replacement engine. Fix the root cause before first start.

Before installation

Chevy 350 replacement-engine install checklist

Confirm the hardware before the crate is opened, identify transfer parts, fix the original failure and keep the core until the return is accepted.

01

Verify VIN K or VIN R

Start with the correct year/VIN family before comparing the more detailed 2-bolt, 4-bolt and fuel-system configurations.

02

Confirm 2-bolt vs 4-bolt

The source catalog separates these configurations. Match the replacement to the original engine information instead of assuming one version.

03

Verify fuel-system hardware

Confirm gasoline vs propane and whether the original application requires the fuel-pump-hole configuration.

04

Plan transfer parts

Long-block listings require vehicle-specific external hardware to be reused. The more complete engine has a different included-component list.

05

Fix cooling and oiling causes

Do not install a reman long block behind a known bad radiator, contaminated oil system or unresolved fuel/control problem.

06

Keep the old core

Current products carry $300–$400 refundable core deposits. Keep the correct rebuildable original engine until the return is received and accepted.

Why GOAT 350

Built around the details that actually separate 350 replacement engines

A generic “Chevy 350” search hides important differences. GOAT breaks the catalog into the actual configurations supplied for the application instead of forcing every 5.7L into one listing.

01

Configuration-specific catalog

Nine active automotive 350 products are separated by the actual hardware differences listed in the source catalog.

02

Dynamic core charges

Each product card reads its own Core Fee tag, so the displayed $300, $350 or $400 refundable deposit stays tied to the correct engine.

03

Catalog-based fitment finder

The Year/Make/Model tool uses our fitment data to narrow the family and never relies on an external model list for the normal vehicle search.

04

Live Shopify product data

Prices, images and availability come from the products in the collection, reducing duplicate information that can drift out of date.

How it works

From 350 identification to installation in four steps

Use the vehicle finder to narrow the family, verify the original engine configuration, order the matching reman, then return the correct rebuildable core under that product’s terms.

01

Narrow the family

Use Year/Make/Model or the VIN decoder to determine whether you are shopping the earlier VIN K family or later VIN R Vortec family.

02

Verify hardware

Confirm main-cap configuration, fuel type, fuel-pump-hole requirement and long-block vs complete-engine needs.

03

Crate & ship

The matching reman engine ships by freight. Inspect the crate and document any visible delivery damage immediately.

04

Install & return core

Install the engine, follow supplied startup requirements and return the correct rebuildable core under the application’s core terms.

Quick answers

Chevy 350 / 5.7L engine FAQs

VIN K vs VIN R, Vortec vs earlier 350s, 2-bolt vs 4-bolt mains, core charges, propane applications and replacement-engine fitment.

Is a Chevy 350 the same as a 5.7L? +
Yes in the context of these GM small-block applications. Chevrolet Performance identifies the 350 as 350 cubic inches / 5.7L. The important buying question is which 350 configuration matches the original vehicle and engine.
What is the bore and stroke of a Chevy 350? +
Chevrolet Performance lists the traditional 350 small-block at a 4.000-inch bore and 3.480-inch stroke.
What is the difference between VIN K and VIN R 5.7L engines here? +
The current GOAT catalog groups 1986-1995 one-piece-seal flat-cam applications under VIN K and 1996-2000 Vortec / roller-cam applications under VIN R. They are separate replacement families and should not be selected by displacement alone.
What does 2-bolt vs 4-bolt main mean for ordering? +
The source catalog offers separate 2-bolt and 4-bolt main assemblies. Treat that as a required configuration check and match the replacement to the original engine information before ordering.
Are the 1996-2000 engines Vortec 350s? +
Yes. The source catalog describes the 1996-2000 VIN R group as Vortec with Gen Plus heads and roller-cam configuration. Chevrolet Performance also notes that production Vortec iron heads were first used on 1996 fuel-injected L31 trucks.
Why are propane engines listed separately? +
The supplier catalog has dedicated 1996-2000 propane configurations. Do not substitute a standard gasoline listing simply because the year and displacement match.
Why does the finder show multiple possible engines for my truck? +
Year/Make/Model can narrow the correct 350 family, but it cannot determine internal main-cap configuration, propane hardware or every specialty fuel-pump-hole difference. Multiple results are intentional when the source catalog requires another identifier.
What is the core charge on these engines? +
The current automotive 350 products use refundable core deposits of $300, $350 or $400 depending on the application. The product card and checkout use the fee assigned to the specific engine.
What comes with the complete 1996-2000 engine? +
The source notes rocker covers, front cover, oil pan, water pump and balancer on the complete-engine configuration. Always use the individual product page as the final included-components reference.
Is this the same as a universal performance crate 350? +
No. This collection is focused on stock-style application-specific replacement engines from the current GOAT reman catalog. A universal hot-rod or performance crate-engine build is a different buying use case.
How do I confirm which engine I need? +
Start with year, make and model, then verify the full VIN, 8th VIN digit, original engine configuration, 2-bolt vs 4-bolt main requirement, fuel type and fuel-pump-hole requirement before ordering.
How does shipping work? +
These replacement engines ship by freight. This hub is configured around a $299 flat-freight value; use the product page and checkout as the final shipping reference.
